New health center

project | New health center
location | Mojácar (Almería)
date | 2024

Roughly two kilometres from the Mediterranean Sea, positioned at an intermediate point along the Rambla de Campos—between the village’s mountainous settlement and its coastal extension—the new Mojácar Health Centre takes shape. The historic village of Mojácar is composed of pure white volumes with sharp edges and sun-faceted planes, pierced only where necessary and naturally adjusted to the terrain on which they stand. Through a contemporary language, the building recovers and reinterprets the values of this popular vernacular architecture.

The project establishes a continuous dialogue between opposing realities. Repetition and uniqueness, regularity and irregularity, naturalness and artificiality confront and intensify one another. This duality guides the organisation of the functional programme, divided into three longitudinal bands. One contains identically sized rooms (the standard consultation areas), while the opposite accommodates the specialised medical units. Between them lies a generous circulation and waiting hall that serves as the central spine of the Centre.

The duality also extends to the building’s location, set midway between sea and mountain. The coastal nucleus and the historic settlement are connected by two parallel routes: a natural ravine and an artificial road. The tension between these paths—the former more sinuous, the latter more taut—is reflected in the building’s geometry. The project’s construction and aesthetic respond simultaneously to local traditions, the constraints of the site, and the requirements of the functional programme, all interpreted through a contemporary perspective.
