Like a dentist’s mouth, a cook’s diet, or a writer’s library, the architect’s house is, in a way, the spatial and material expression of its owner. The architect’s house presents itself as a showcase of its author’s architectural concerns. It is an experimental laboratory in which to exemplify the spatial, constructive, artistic, and programmatic inquiries of the house through one’s own domestic experience.
In the architect’s house, the different elements infect one another, contaminate each other, exchange properties and forces… in the words of Louis Kahn: “they speak to one another.” Rather than turning rooms into nouns, the architect’s house aspires to endow them with meaning. It is not about making a function evident. It is about achieving rooms that serve many purposes or, as Georges Perec said, rooms “that serve no purpose.” It is precisely this seemingly useless search to nourish the spirit and to elevate the dwelling to the category of home where the architect’s greatest concerns in his house reside.
